Role of young learners in saving mother Earth

"We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."

Often environmentalist and and adults participating in the Climate Change and Environmental conservation discussions undermine the role of young people in slowing and reversing the adverse effects of Climate change. Learners can contribute alot in making the world greener. With many educational curriculums in different countries incoporating Environmental studies in theirnational  Education Curriculums, learners are provided with skills and knowledge to turn the tide on global warming and make the world cleaner and greener. Learners are able to gain an understanding of  effective agricultural practices and efficient energy production/conservations among other topics.

As educators and environmentalist, if we encouraged all learners to plant a tree on their birthday we shall soon have over eight billion trees in a few years. This would go a long way in reducing drought, food insecurity(trees are a source of food too!) and global warming. Learners should also be encouraged to reuse(Reuse your today so that you don't have to reduce your tomorrow), reduce and recycle. Alot of plastic can be recycled to make artistic decorations, toys and even petrol. Recycling also helps to save energy in manufacturing.

While conserving energy helps reduce emmision of greenhouse gases, consequently reducing global warming, it is more vital to look for energy sources that do not pollute the environment and switch to using them. Learners are better placed to discover, innovate and increase efficiency of energy sources when we provide to them quality education and encouraging them to get the best education they can!

As an educator, what can you do to inspire learners to take more roles in making the world greener?

To get more insights on how we can collectively reduce our carbon footprint and making the air we breathe cleaner, lets follow the ongoing Cop28 convention framework on climate change HERE and take action from the insights we gather. Thank you.
